Scientific Research

  • Scientific research on a number of projects involved with various aspects of weed biology and ecology, soil seed banks, biological control, seed dormancy and germination, herbicide resistance and efficacy
  • Collaboration in and project management of the Integrated Vegetation Management Program (IVMP)
  • Integrated Vegetation Management (IVM) research across numerous environments exploring more sustainable management practices and suitable IVM solutions for various LGS's, SGA's and utilities companies throughout South East Queensland and New South Wales
  • Research and product development projects that have contributed to the registration of a number of herbicide products that support the management of environmental weeds in Australia
  • Management of federally funded research projects that are focussed on providing new solutions for the most pressing weed management issues for asset managers
  • Research into Aquatic Weed Management issues and IVM strategies in aquatic environments
  • Research and product development activities exploring herbicide options for aquatic weed management

Teaching and Training

  • Lecturing and tutoring tertiary level plant and weed identifications to students at the University of Queensland
  • Delivery of training workshops on weed identification to staff in other organisations
  • Assessment of the herbarium collections of students undertaking courses in Agricultural Science and Veterinary Science
  • Supervision of a number of students undertaking postgraduate PhD and Masters programmes at the University of Queensland
  • Organisation of several training workshops for postgraduate students involved with the CRC for Australian Weed Management (CRCAWM)
  • Regular speaking engagements at various local forums (e.g. SEQ Weeds Forum, Brisbane Biodiversity Forum, Vegetation Managers Forum) on weed and vegetation management issues, integrated vegetation management, and new and emerging weed threats

Development of Teaching and Training Tools

  • Development of interactive training CD's at the Centre for Pest Information Technology and Transfer (CPITT), including WeedBiocontrol in association with CSIRO and RiceIPM in association with the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI)
  • Development of undergraduate courses in Weed Science as part of the School of Land and Food Sciences at the University of Queensland
  • Development of courses for the Graduate Certificate in Plant Protection through the CRC for Tropical Plant Protection (CRCTPP)
  • Development of tertiary education materials as part of the Education program within the CRC for Australian Weed Management (CRCAWM)

Weed Mapping

Weed surveys, weed mapping projects and species composition audits have been conducted for a variety of organisations including the Department of Transport and Main Roads, the Horizon Alliance, Veolia Water and for numerous Local Government clients.
